Cleaning House

Since we have been home from the beach I have been overwhelmed with housework! I finally got caught up on laundry, but it isn't the laundry that is overwhelming. It is the clutter! It makes me not even want to try to clean it up. Joel made the comment last week that it looked like the kids were home all day without any supervision. Like it was a Lord of the Flies house or something!

It was so nice to be at the beach house and have so little. I let the kids each bring a book and a toy and we never even got them out. Within an hour of being home it seemed like every room was trashed. I finally gave in to Joel's wisdom to get rid of the kids toys. I think I buy the toys more for me than I do for them. They don't even miss the toys when they are out of sight. Well. I can't keep up anymore. Since Chloe isn't a baby anymore, it seems like the mess has doubled! I used to be able to keep up with it. There is just too much stuff. I am going to put all the toys out of their rooms and most of them into the attic. I want to be somewhat organized when I do this in case I want to switch out some of their toys later. The toy room is in the basement, and I have gradually been thinning those out as well. I guess I will let them each keep a stuffed toy on the bed, but only one. They do play with them quite a lot.

I can't wait to feel free from this stuff! I don't know what took me so long to come to this decision. I have a few friends who just have no clutter- you know who you are. I always come home from their house and want to purge my own. It has to be that the less you have the easier it is. I don't even know how we have accumulated so much. Maybe Joel and I both come from families who don't want to throw stuff away. I am gradually changing to the opposite. It really does feel good to have less.

Here is a picture of the stuff I have removed from their rooms. Now it is in my room! The longer it stays there the more chance there is for it to be spread back all over the house! I need to get this organzied and put away today! Wish me luck! :)
If you have any organization or living clutter free tips feel free to share!

Go Jenny, GO! I wish you great luck. If you are successful, can you come up and help me do mine? I have the same problem and am trying desperately to remedy it before we have to start school in a few weeks. :P

I think Christmases and birthdays, and starting new seasons, are the times we get an overload of stuff in our house. Christmas is a tough one, because it isn't like you can give the stuff back! But for birthdays, we've been saying, no gifts please, and that has really helped. The changing of the seasons- I just have to make sure I am rid of as much of the old as I take in of the new. So far so good.
